India Records a Spike of 23,000 New Cases; Making her the Third Worst-Hit in the World.

India outdoes Russia in COVID-19 cases and turns into the third most hit nation on the planet. India revealed more than 23,000 new coronavirus diseases on Sunday. The total cases in India have now arrived at 697k.

The first case of COVID-19 in India, which originated from China, was reported on 30 January 2020. As of 6 July 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has confirmed a total of 697,413 cases, 424,432 recoveries (including 1 migration), and 19,693 deaths in the country.

In the Indian capital New Delhi, medical staff started treating patients at a spiritual center converted into a sprawling isolation facility and hospital with 10,000 beds, many made of cardboard, and chemically coated to make them waterproof.

About the size of 20 football fields, the facility on the outskirts of the city will treat mild symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.

The US has had the most cases, with nearly 2.9 million. Brazil is second, with over 1.6 million. India has seen eight times the number of cases as China, which has a similar-sized population and where the virus originated late last year.

A strict lockdown in place since late March has gradually been lifted, allowing most activities after the economy nose-dived during the shutdown.

Schools, metro trains in cities, cinemas, gyms, and swimming pools remain closed and international flights are still grounded. Authorities have made wearing masks mandatory in public places, while large gatherings are banned and shops and other public establishments are required to implement social distancing.

In other news, Australia will effectively seal off the state of Victoria from the rest of the country. China reported four new cases, three from outside the country and one transmitted locally in Beijing, the National Health Commission reported.

The number of cases in Germany increased by 219 to 196,554, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed. Brazil recorded 26,051 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus during the past 24 hours as well as 602 deaths, the Health Ministry said.

Mexican health authorities reported 4,683 confirmed new infections of the novel coronavirus, pushing its tally to a total of 256,848, and 273 more deaths to a total of 30,639. Philip Gunn, Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, says he has tested positive for the coronavirus as state health officials report more than 200 new infections and five deaths linked to the pandemic.

Authorities in Kazakhstan have re-imposed a countrywide lockdown amid a spike in coronavirus cases. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced on Sunday a new $1.5 billion package of measures to help keep the country’s ailing middle class afloat as the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage the economy of the world’s top copper producer.
